To mark the August 2022 death of longtime Princeton basketball coach Pete Carril, Alexander Wolff honed in on a single game: a contest at Virginia in 1975 from which the future Hall of Famer got tossed. With no assistants on the bench, he put the team in the hands of a reserve junior guard, who by leading the Tigers to an unlikely victory proved that the greatest teacher is the one who engineers his own dispensability.
