Now out from Library of America, Basketball: Great Writing About America’s Game

It was great fun to serve as editor of the latest special publication from the Library of America, those proud and conscientious curators of the best of American literary culture. Basketball: Great Writing About America’s Game takes its place alongside previous LOA anthologies on boxing, baseball, and football, as well as David Foster Wallace on tennis and the collected sportswriting of W.C. Heinz. Here I talk about the process of assembling the collection, which includes such voices as inventor James Naismith, John McPhee, Jimmy Breslin, David Halberstam, Rick Telander, Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Frank Deford, and Gary Smith.
